The term “Chengrisi”, a localized Tamang pronunciation of “Chenrezig”—the Tibetan name for Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion—holds profound religious, cultural, and philosophical significance in the Tamang Buddhist community of Nepal. As the embodiment of boundless compassion in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, Chengrisi is venerated as a compassionate protector who tirelessly vows to aid all sentient beings in their journey toward liberation from suffering. Tamangs invoke Chengrisi especially during life-cycle rituals such as death rites (Ghewa, Phowa), ancestral ceremonies (Methu), and various communal pujas, where Tamang Lamas and Ghyabri perform sacred chants and symbolic offerings. His mantra, “Om Mani Padme Hum,” is deeply integrated into daily spiritual practice—recited during prayers, spun on prayer wheels, and inscribed on flags and stones—as a means of purifying karma and cultivating inner and outer compassion. Iconographically, Chengrisi is often depicted in a four-armed form, symbolizing purity, generosity, and ceaseless activity, or in his majestic eleven-headed, thousand-armed form, illustrating his infinite ability to perceive and respond to suffering in all realms.
